Toronoto rapper and producer Tory Lanez’s 2014 mixtape Lost Cause helped put him on the map in more ways than one. Most importantly at this point, it caught the ear wunderkind super-producer Benny Blanco, who signed Lanez to Interscope via his own Mad Love imprint. The two are currently working on Lanez’s debut album, but in the meantime, Lanez teamed with LA dark-grime collective WEDIDIT earlier this year for the collaborative EP Cruel Intentions.
His latest track is not quite as dark as those on the EP. “Say It” is buoyed by a sample of gospel-infused harmonies on the chorus, but there’s nothing religious about it. It’s hard not to compare his slow, sensual flow to Toronto’s golden boy Drake, but the only thing Lanez shares with him is a former hometown. Now a Miami resident, he easily incorporates southern beats and that city’s well-known late night debauchery into this new song. Listen.
