Yannick Ilunga is a genre-blurring singer and producer from Cape Town, South Africa who records under the name Petite Noir. He’ll release his album La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful next month, and we’ve already posted his “Best” video. The new Petite Noir track is called “MDR,” and it twitches and shuffles and swoons. Genre-wise, it’s closer to ’80s new wave than anything else, and in its bubbling rhythm and incandescent harmonies, it seems to borrow from the ’80s Western pop stars who borrowed from Afropop. Fair enough! Listen to “MDR” below.
La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful is out 9/11 on Domino Records.
