Mark Ronson mined the sounds of ’80s funk down to the bone on Uptown Special, and he found a great gift in the soulful highs of Keyone Starr, a previously unknown preacher’s daughter from Mississippi who sings on a few of the tracks on that album. A new remix from current UK electronic darling Duke Dumont keeps the voice, but strips the funk away and replaces it with another vestige of the ’80s: house music. It’s tailor-made for the club, and recalls the way a lot of early electronic dance music borrowed from the sounds of soul and disco. Everything comes full circle. Listen below.
