Jenny Hval is an experimental composer and songwriter, and last month she signed to Sacred Bones and announced her new album Apocalypse, girl. This morning, she’s shared the first song from that album, and it suggests some fascinating new directions for the album. “That Battle Is Over,” on first glance, sounds like it might be the most immediate and accessible thing Hval has ever done. She’s singing linear melodies over uncluttered beats, and it’s not that far removed, musically, from standard singer-songwriter fare. But lyrically, she’s wrestling with grand and uncomfortable concepts, like capitalism’s absolute victory over every other ideology: “The battle is over / And feminism’s over / And socialism’s over.” Listen to it below.
Apocalypse, girl is out 6/9 via Sacred Bones.
